چکیده

Given the high throughput requirement for 5G, merging millimeter wave technologies and multi-user MIMO seems a very promising strategy. As hardware limitations impede to realize a full digital architecture, hybrid MIMO architectures using both analog and digital precoding are considered a feasible solution to implement multi-user MIMO at millimeter wave. Real channel propagation and hardware non-idealities degrade the performance of such systems thus experimenting the new architecture is crucial to support system design. Nevertheless, hybrid MIMO systems are not yet understood as the effects of the wide channel bandwidths at millimeter wave, the nonideal RF front end as well as the imperfections of the analog beamforming using phased antenna arrays are often neglected. In this paper, we present a 60 GHz multi-user MIMO testbed using phased antenna arrays at both transmitter and receivers. The base station equipped with a 32 phased antenna array allocates simultaneously two users. We show that frequency selective hybrid precoding can efficiently suppress inter-user interference enabling spatial multiplexing in interference limited scenario doubling the throughput compared to a SISO scenario and compensating the frequency fluctuation of the channel. In addition, we report an EVM constellation improvement of 6d́B when comparing the hybrid MIMO architecture with a fully analog architecture. Keywords—Hybrid Beamforming, Millimeter Wave Communication, Multi User MIMO, Phased Antenna Array.

Hybrid Analog-Digital Beamforming: How Many RF Chains and Phase Shifters Do We Need?

This paper considers hybrid beamforming (HB) for downlink multiuser massive MIMO systems with frequency selective channels. For this system, first we quantify the required number of radio frequency (RF) chains and phase shifters (PSs) such that the proposed HB achieves the same performance as that of the digital beamforming (DB) which utilizes N (number of transmitter antennas) RF chains. We sh...

Constructing Receiver Signal Points using Constrained Massive MIMO Arrays

A low cost solution for constructing receiver signal points is investigated that combines a large number of constrained radio frequency (RF) frontends with a limited number of full RF chains. The constrained RF front ends have low cost and are limited to on/off switching of antenna elements and a small number of phases. Severe degradations are typically observed for multi-user MIMO for these si...

Spectral Efficiency Optimization For Millimeter Wave Multi-User MIMO Systems

As a key enabling technology for 5G wireless, millimeter wave (mmWave) communication motivates the utilization of large-scale antenna arrays for achieving highly directional beamforming. However, the high cost and power consumption of RF chains stands in the way of adoption of the optimal fullydigital precoding in large-array systems. To reduce the number of RF chains while still maintaining th...

Hybrid Beamforming in Frequency Selective Massive MIMO Systems: A Single-Carrier or a Multicarrier Problem?

In this paper, we propose novel hybrid analog and digital beamforming techniques for the uplink of massive multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems under frequency-selective and rich scattering propagation conditions. Considering an L-tap wireless channel, we first derive the closed-forms for single-carrier L-tap and 1-tap RF beamformers. Then, we demonstrate that the proposed beamformers ...

A Platform for At-Scale Wideband UHF MU-MIMO Systems

We present a Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) array utilizing the Wideband UHF Radio daughter-Card (WURC), a new open platform for at-scale MU-MIMO transmissions in the UHF band up to 1 Watt over up to 28 MHz of programmable channel bandwidth. Using this platform, we demonstrate an application that measures and displays wideband MU-MIMO channel estimates and capacity for both UHF and 2.4 GHz WiFi chan...
